As news people, we get a little hardened by the things we have to report. The sight of a gurney at an accident or crime scene ceases to faze us after a while. That is, until it hits home. And this time, for me, it has hit to the point that my journalistic wall cannot even endure. Folks, we have lost an exceptional human being in yet another senseless and incomprehensible tragedy and I am asking for you to pray for the family of John and Jean Cannon.
I have long been acquainted with this family, not just John and Jean, but their extended family. They all have the same loving traits that have been shown time and again to my own family. John has long been an activist for our local music scene and has supported fledgling bands on the Augusta circuit for decades. In his wake traveled his daughter Alexis. John would bring her to rehearsals and to gigs and she became a part of the music scene. Rather than be a “bar” atmosphere, Alexis’s presence made it more like a family event. To many of Augusta’s musicians, Alexis was like our own child.
We all watched Alexis grow into a wonderful young woman. While most people think that the “rock and roll” lifestyle is no place for a child, Alexis’s experience was far different than one would expect. Her parents both love music, but music took a back seat when it came to parenting. They succeeded in raising an intelligent, well rounded, and promising girl who was recently married to a member of our armed services.
We lost Alexis this weekend; she was the victim of an unfortunate automobile accident. She was someone in the wrong place at the wrong time and now we are forced with saying goodbye. I know that this is not a very journalistic statement for me to make, but I do believe in the power of prayer. Please join me in praying for John and Jean Cannon and their family. My father always told me that God’s plan even includes tragic events that we have a hard time understanding. I can only hope that God’s plan is at work here and that the Cannon’s will find his comfort in their loss.
