AUGUSTA, GA - The Augusta music family was stunned last week by the tragic loss of Alexis Colohan-Cannon, the 21-year-old daughter of Jean and Stoney Cannon. I think I can speak for many when I extend my heartfelt love and support to them during this difficult time.
Stoney has relentlessly championed the lokal music scene for over 15 years, often with Alexis in tow, and her passing has now brought our music community even closer together. Lexi’s Legacy, a scholarship fund, has been established and will keep her memory alive forever.
Stoney’s Lokal Loudness, in conjunction with Confederation of Noisemakers, will have an Augusta music showcase at The Playground on Friday, April 18, and Saturday, April 19. In light of recent events, the bands involved have decided that “the show must go on” and money raised will help establish Lexi’s Legacy.
Bands playing Friday include Bayou Bleu, Dirty Sons of Ireland, Fletch & Folk, Language Arts and Turf War. Saturday’s lineup includes Against the Grain, Mason Jars, Radar Cinema, Sound Equation and Suns Collide. For more information, visit lokalloudness.com.
Lots of voodoo stuff going on in the AUG lately and it started Masters weekend with the Electric Voodoo Blues band performing outside on 10th and Broad with strong new vocalist Fayth Hope complementing guitarist and vocalist Riley Williams quite nicely.
Big Bad Voodoo Daddy bring their cool contemporary swing sound to the Bell Auditorium on Thursday, April 17, for another wonderful Pops! At the Bell series performance with the Augusta Symphony.
Last, but not least, The Voodoo Organist brings his Hammond organ, bass pedals and theremin to the Soul Bar, also on Thursday, for his take on Gothic blues rock.
Edwin McCain returns to The Imperial Theatre on Saturday, April 19, in support of his new album “Lost In America.”
Rock’n 4 The River is a free, day-long music and arts festival designed to raise awareness for the need of a mercury-free Savannah River on Saturday, April 26, from 1-9 p.m. Local food vendors, kids area, live art demos, along with the fine brews of Atlanta’s Sweetwater Brewery, should make for an entertaining day for the whole family. The Codetalkers, The Crosstie Walkers, The Shaun Piazza Band, The Cubists, HiFi Felix, Brandon Bower and Space Hammer are all scheduled to perform. For more information, check out rockn4theriver.com.
I’ve been asked to DJ between bands for the Payback (Celebrate James Brown) Concert on Saturday, May 3, at The Augusta Common, and I’m so looking forward to it. The Doobie Brothers, Branford Marsalis, The Soul Generals, Greg Hester, The Swanee Quintet and Modern Skirts are all on the bill. The Augusta Museum of History will open its exhibit the same weekend celebrating the life and music of The Godfather of Soul. For more information, visit paybackjamesbrown.com.
We know it’s only spring, but it’s time to submit your Christmas songs to be considered for The 12 Bands of Christmas CD and concert. Send your original or traditional holiday recording to GlueStick at 756 Broad Street or e-mail an mp3 to info@soulbar.com by May 2. Remember, recording quality does not really matter, since the idea is to get as many submissions as possible.
See ya downtown,
Coco
